What is Potassium chloride?

Potassium chloride refers to various mined and manufactured salts that contain potassium in water-soluble form. Potassium is one of the three primary plant macronutrients, along with nitrogen and phosphorus. In the soil, potassium exists mainly in the form of potassium ions that bond tightly to clay and organic matter. Potassium helps regulate the water balance and nutrient flow within plants.

Major Potassium chloride Deposits

Most of the world's potassium chloride deposits were formed between 250 million and 65 million years ago. The largest reserves are located in Canada, Belarus, Germany, Russia and Israel. Canada has more than half of identified global Potash reserves and is one of the top three producers. Belarus and Russia also have large underground deposits in thick beds of salt. Potassium chloride is extracted through conventional underground m ining processes or solution mining, which dissolves the potassium chloride and pumps the brine to the surface for processing.
