Sunnyvale, CA, is in the heart of Silicon Valley and home to such internationally known corporations as Yahoo, Google and LinkedIn. Sunnyvale is the birthplace of the video game Pong.
Sunnyvale was once considered the “Garden of the World” because of its many fruit orchards. Over the years, the area has also been “Beautiful Murphy” and later, in the 1900s, as “the City of Destiny.”
The city has about 153,000 residents.
Here are some highlights of Sunnyvale:
- Learn to make lace: The Lace Museum has approximately 10,000 pieces of lace, as well as lace-making tools and books that have been donated over the years. Some of these items date to the 1700s. The nonprofit museum holds classes and sales throughout the year.
- Have a laugh: Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club has been bringing comedy to the masses since 1984. Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Schumer and Dana Carvey have appeared on stage. This historic landmark was the location of the beta test of the first video game, Pong, back in the 1970s in what was then known as Andy Capps Tavern.
- Visit the orchards: What started as a small farm and fruit stand has grown into a California mainstay. Olson’s historic family-owned farm grows and harvests Bing cherries and Blenheim apricots. Check out some of their delicious cherry recipes. The city has honored the Olson family by naming a street after them. Olson Way is located in downtown Sunnyvale at the corner of N. Taaffe.
- Pick up produce: Sunnyvale’s Farmers Market is open rain or shine on Saturday mornings along Murphy Avenue at Washington.
- Take in some art: Sunnyvale is committed to the arts with over 100 pieces of public art on display.
