Wastewater and chemical processing benefit from industrial-grade probes with pressurised or gelled references, higher temperature/pressure ratings, and housings for in-line cleaning. If you touch hydrofluoric acid or high-solvent streams, specify HF-resistant glass or antimony and confirm compatibility with your solvent system. In-Line vs Portable: Matching Form to Workflow

Benchtop probes paired with handheld meters offer flexibility, quick spot-checks, and low cost of ownership. In-line probes, however, deliver continuous data, feed control loops, and reduce operator variability. If you run CIP/SIP or corrosive washdowns, look for probes rated accordingly and consider retractable assemblies that let you clean and calibrate without stopping the process. Differential pH sensors, which measure pH against a salt bridge rather than a single reference, can outperform conventional references in heavily contaminated streams and are worth the premium in tough duty.

Data Quality and Documentation: Turning Readings into Decisions

Treat pH like any critical measurement: document calibrations, record slope and offset, and use control charts to spot drift early. Standardise buffer lots across sites when comparing data globally. For audits, maintain traceability of buffers to recognised standards and keep a simple log of cleaning and storage actions.
